On a recent trip to a state that has had immeasurable influence on my journey, I had an opportunity to immerse myself in the culinary delights of Los Angeles. My official reason for visiting was a Hallmark Channel appearance, but naturally, I made plenty of time to partake in the rich palate that this wonderfully diverse city boasts!
The Grand Central Market was the perfect embodiment of the incredible spectrum of flavors that is part of the fabric of L.A. Chili peppers, spices and artisanal foods all mold the culinary landscape of this beautiful city, and they’re all available in ample supply at this historic landmark.
The highlight of my day was finally getting to sample the world-famous Eggslut, named as one of the top 10 new U.S. restaurants in 2014. The restaurant’s location within Grand Central Market features a 20-foot counter that serves as the setting for a personal “peep show” into what I like to call “egg porn”! From this vantage point you can see Egglslut’s cooks working their culinary magic on the griddle. The end product for me on this day – the Bacon Egg and Cheese – consists of a buttery brioche bun with a perfectly cooked sunny side up egg, cheddar cheese and a cascade of delectable bacon that’s got the perfect saltiness/smokiness ratio. There’s no scrimping either, as the pieces literally overflowed out of my sandwich!
A “secret sauce” that contains a delicious ketchup base is the ideal complement and perfectly enhances the flavor of the dish. The entire experience was the culmination of years of hype, longing, curiosity and mouth-watering anticipation. Sinking my teeth into what I can best describe as a “pillowy” bun and an exquisite fusion of egg, cheese and perfectly textured bacon was truly “love at first bite”, and the synergy of indulging in this heavenly delicacy in the City of Angels certainly wasn’t lost on me! The entire experience can best be summed up by tweaking Don Draper’s trademark “Simple yet significant” catchphrase into the slightly more appropriate “Simple and spectacular”!
